Our Mission
The Cowichan Brain Injury Society promotes understanding and rehabilitation to "ALL" affected with brain injury by providing education, support and services during their lifespan.
UPDATE: Bill C-277, the National Strategy on Brain Injuries Act, made significant progress in the legislative process with a unanimous vote of 324-0-2 at second reading in the House of Commons on June 12, 2024. This milestone was achieved through the collaborative advocacy efforts mentioned in the House reading, from your Cowichan Brain Injury Society (CBIS), as well as the CGB Centre for Traumatic Life Losses, and the BC Brain Injury Association.
The proposed national strategy aims to support over 1.5 million Canadians living with brain injuries by improving awareness, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery outcomes. It addresses the challenges faced by brain injury survivors in accessing adequate care and support through measures such as promoting preventive initiatives, enhancing healthcare professional training, and creating national guidelines for brain injury management.
MP Alistair MacGregor, who introduced the bill, celebrated the unanimous vote, stating on Twitter, "Moments ago the House of Commons unanimously voted in favour of Bill C-277, the National Strategy on Brain Injuries Act. History was made today..." See.
With the continued advocacy of CBIS and other organizations, the path towards a comprehensive national brain injury strategy is becoming clearer, offering hope for improved support and resources for those impacted by brain injuries across Canada.
